The world high up is full of wonder,
But up close it tends to breed cruel terror -
Lucky for us our eyes see farther
Than the horrors that around us wander.

Let no pit paltry contain your soul,
Nor let thy mind bear the heavy toll
Of the largesse, the vast, unending whole
Of the cosmos in its path, out of your control.

Take some careful care, do not be broken,
Nature breaks and mends, and needs no helping:
Relent your wish, your whim, it is all taken;
Already your death has come, already thy life is done.
